Papers, 1838-1865, undated, include: legal papers such as a marriage contract, mortgages, deeds, and bonds; poetry; three locks of hair; paymaster's note for Samuel Alden's pay following his death; and the Civil War service record (copy) of Samuel Alden. There is also a receipt to John A. Alden for dues paid in 1861 to the Hillsdale College Amphictyon Society. Papers, 1838-1858, are from Erie County (N.Y.). Later materials are from Hillsdale County (Mich.).

Alden, Alanson.

Samuel Alden was the son of Alanson Alden. Samuel enlisted in the Independent Company, 4th Michigan Infantry on Feb. 25, 1864 at Scipio (Mich.) at the age of 19. He was mustered on April 5, 1864 and died of disease near Petersburg (Va.) on Aug. 10, 1864. Alanson Alden lived in Manilla (Erie County, N.Y.), and later Jonesville (Hillsdale County, Mich.).
